Halloween Rugby: #22 Notre Dame vs #14 Indiana University

November 02, 2014Sean O'Leary

South Bend, Indiana – On October 31st, before donning their Halloween costumes, the men of Notre Dame and IU came together to play two matches for inter-state dominance. In the frigid, below freezing temperatures the Irish and the Hoosiers played two heated matches under the lights at the Stinson Rugby Complex. Indiana came into the match after a close battle with the University of Michigan and a blowout of Michigan State in the two preceding weeks.  The Hoosiers also rode in on an undefeated season, 14th ranking in the country, and first place in the Big Ten. Notre Dame started their fall season in 15’s with victories over a ranked Ohio State squad and the Chicago Griffins. The Irish then switched to 7’s in early October before reverting for the Indiana match.

The JV Irish and Hoosiers kicked off the evening’s festivities at 6 pm in a fury of flurries and a howling wind. The weather played a significant role in this match as neither team was able to generate fluid offense. In a largely defensive match, the lone offensive highlight for Notre Dame was a hard fought try to leave the score 10-5 at halftime. Despite the weather and the effort of the Irish, IU was able to trudge in for four tries and no conversions. Notre Dame JV loses 20-5.

The Varsity Irish and IU kicked off at 7:30 with snow just clinging to the ground but none falling from the sky. What pursued was a near polar opposite of the preceding match as IU and Notre Dame went back and forth in an offensive shootout. Notre Dame struck first on a quick tap penalty and the two teams began trading tries to a 19-24 halftime deficit for the Irish. Notre Dame demonstrated its strength in the forwards early and often by winning forward play, lineouts, and mauls. Scrums, however, crippled the Irish all night. IU’s strength was in their backs where many of their tries were scored. In the second half, with the wind at their back, IU began to pull away. Notre Dame continued its forward dominance by adding three more tries by forwards but two late up-and-unders by the Hoosiers served as the nails in ND’s coffin. Notre Dame Varsity loses 45-34.

Notre Dame left disappointed in the match but optimistic about their future. The young side started eight underclassman in a ranked collegiate match and went blow for blow with a Big Ten power. Five of six Irish tries were also scored by underclassman: two by Freshman prop Jack Mitchell and three by Sophomore hooker Luc Joseph. Senior Richard Kessler also scored a try.

Tries: L. Joseph (3), J. Mitchell (2), R. Kessler (1)

Conversions: A. Preising  (2)

Substitutions: D. Abadin @ 26, A. Wray @ 43, R. Giambone @ 56.
